Exxon Valdez – Research Statement

Hello Everyone

Welcome to my Blog!

My name is Alexis; I am a 4th year student at McMaster University majoring in Geography and Environmental Studies with minors in history, sustainability and geographic information systems.

The topic for this blog will be a very strong interest I have which is oil and oil spills; I gained this interest from attending McMaster University. This Blog is about Catastrophes; many would argue that oil is a catastrophe by itself. Although this is a huge topic that has many disasters, for this blog the catastrophe that I will be focusing on is Exxon Valdez oil spill.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill happened on Friday March 24, 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska USA. This oil spill is a disaster due to the fact that it Exxon Valdez was an oil tanker that spilt oil into the Sound caused immense environmental disaster. Exxon can be seen as an environmental disaster due to the geographic location of this disaster and the sensitive ecological area that it was surrounding. With my background in geography and environmental studies much of my interest and view of disasters are the natural ones but this environmental disaster has a human component to it. There are many factors that play into why this was such a disaster, many of which I hope to investigate within this blog.

Within this blog I will also be comparing this oil spills to others that have happened this might lead just within the United States of America but it might also lead me outside of North America.
